Enjoy eight days (August 12-20, 2003) visiting dazzling lakes nestled within the Alps in Northern Italy. Led by Dr. Randy Ingram '87, Davidson professor and expert in medieval literature, immerse yourself in the culture and life of an area that has inspired great works of art for centuries. Unpack only once at the first-class Lido Palace Hotel in Baveno, Italy, your home for the duration of the trip. Located on Lake Maggiore, the hotel provides an expansive view of the water and the Borromean Islands. From there, you will visit other nearby lakes such as Lake Orta and Lake Como, Europe's deepest lake and the home of lavish villas. Visits to cities Stresa and Milan afford up close and personal studies of famous works of art and architecture.
The lakes provide a relaxing residence at the end of each day, as you relax and enjoy classic Italian cuisine accented with the sumptuous Mediterranean ambiance of friendly locals, fresh air, and clear water. "In 1818, Percy and Mary Shelley traveled to the Lake District of Italy and were so enchanted that they looked for a permanent home there. Finding none, they had to move on. In 2003, Anne Ingram and I and a group of Davidsonians will follow Percy and Mary's steps. If our group is so overwhelmed by the scenery, the food, the art, the history, the fashion, the hospitality, the weather, and the company, that we never want to come back, who can blame us? We will be part of a grand tradition." Dr. Randy Ingram Travel Home Page
