Matt Merrell ’84, Director of Alumni Relations and 31 Davidson Alumni and friends had a great time exploring Roman aqueducts, Moorish structures and renaissance artists. The ancient city of Ávila felt like home after their seven night stay in the first-class Palacio Valderrábanos Gran Hotel. This hotel was located in the historical center of town, across from the cathedral and within the shadows of its 11th-century city walls. Throughout the week they toured Ávila, Salamanca, the castles and aqueducts of Segovia, the gothic cathedrals of Toledo, the world-renowned Prado Museum in Madrid, and the Royal Monastery of San Lorenzo in El Escorial. They visited four UNESCO World Heritage Sites and receive a vast education in Spanish history from medieval times, highlighted by Salamanca, through contemporary life, which is abundantly evident in Madrid.
