Village Life in Dordogne, France

Tour Dates:  June 23-July 1, 2005

Join Professor of History, Earl Edmonson, in exploring the heart of provincial France. This seven-night trip will take you through the Dordogne River Valley, Bordeaux, and to several medieval towns. You will gain an intimate knowledge of the area by spending all seven nights in the charming town of Sarlat-la-Canéda, which is, itself a historical monument.  The long and rich history of this region will become apparent when you visit the prehistoric caves of the Périgord region. This highlight, dated from 15,000 B.C., is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You will also tour Les Eyzies where you will find what some describe as the earliest evidence of Homo Sapiens in existence. A visit to Racamadour will reveal the deep faith of pilgrims who made their way there to climb approximately 200 steps on their knees to reach a series of chapels at the top. A cruise up the Dordogne aboard a traditional 19th-century barge will complete the trip and take you to the ruins of Castlenaud, a 13th- century castle.

Your home while in Dordogne will be the beautiful Hôtel de la Madeleine. Built in the 19th-century, it is ideally situated just outside the ancient walls of the village’s medieval quarter. It is an intimate hotel with only 39 guest rooms that offers first-class personalized service for its guests. You will dine on the region’s finest cuisine prepared by the hotel’s owner and one of the region’s most renowned chefs, Philippe Melot.
