Since there are a limited number of single rooms available on campus, these rooms generally go to students with some of the lowest lottery numbers - most often seniors and juniors, but sometimes sophomores as well. Single Room Selection occurs separately from selection for doubles and suites (usually before). For an updated selection schedule, please go to the Lottery Timeline.
Available Singles
Most singles on campus are found in Tomlinson pods (64 total) and Irwin, Akers, Knox (51 total). There are also 10 singles on 4th Belk, 10 singles in Duke, as well as 17 singles in North and South (rising sophomores only).
Single Room Clusters
Clusters of up to 4 students are allowed in Tomlinson Pods and Irwin, Akers, and Knox. If students are interested in living by one another in one of these communities, they will need to attend the Single Room Selection night together. Their lottery numbers will be averaged and they will be placed in lottery number order with other students desiring a single room.
Didn't Get a Single?
Since all returning students must select a room during the Lottery process, students who do not receive a single during Single Room Selection MUST select a double room or a suite during that part of the process. Furthermore, since students are required to go through Double/Suite Selection in pairs, we suggest and encourage students who are trying for a single room to have a backup plan by having a potential roommate already in place. For further information on Double/Suite Selection, please click here.
Singles Waitlist
Any students present for Single Room Selection who do not receive a single will be added to a Singles Waitlist immediately following Single Room Selection. These students will be placed on the waitlist by lottery number order*. After that time, students will be placed on the Singles Waitlist by date and time according to when they are added to the Waitlist. During the summer or next school year, any time a single room does become available, it will be offered to the next student on the Waitlist.
* NOTE: Remember - any student on the Single Waitlist MUST find a roommate and participate in Double/Suite Selection to receive an assignment for fall semester; however, their name will remain on the Singles Waitlist.
