William Nelson Mathis '88 (Year Awarded--1998) Texans, most especially those from Houston, like to do things in a big way. This Class of 1988 alumnus is no exception, and his excesses are a matter of record - bird hunting, fine cigars, good boots, old friends, and Davidson College. Thank goodness that alma mater made the list! First as a student - hall counselor, fraternity president, Union Board secretary-treasurer - then as an alumnus, he has loved Davidson College like a Longhorn loves Texas. For seven of the ten years since graduation, he has served as Annual Fund Chair for the Class of 1988. For five of those years, he has been a valued member of the Annual Fund's National Leadership Council, with responsibilities as chair of Young Alumni class campaigns. During his tenure as a key leader of one of the most successful Annual Funds in the country, alumni participation has consistently surpassed 50% and dollar totals have climbed to a new single-year high of nearly $4,500,000. Along the way, he has kept a hand in other activities, too. New scholarships honoring Dean Will Terry and Dr. Basil Boyd have greatly benefited from his interest, as have Class of l988 reunions and the College's Board of Visitors. - Because you have been our advocate at college fairs and in foundation boardrooms
- Because you have worked diligently to bring young alumni to the service of their college
- Because you are generous in your gifts of time, money, and spirit
- And, because you serve with modesty and with good humor
The Davidson College Alumni Association proudly awards you, William Nelson Mathis '88, its Alumni Service Award on the occasion of the Class of l988's tenth reunion, October 24, 1998.
