Ernest "Ernie" Gordon Doe '69 (Year Awarded--2004) Arriving at Davidson College in the fall of 1965, this native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, immediately marked himself as a leader among his peers. Ernie majored in both mathematics and economics. He served as an officer in the Kappa Sigma fraternity. He was a member of the football team and laid the foundation that would later make him a national weight lifting champion. Upon graduation from Davidson, Ernie enrolled in UCLA and received a master’s degree in finance. While there he met his lovely wife, Gail. Together they have forged a strong partnership in support of Davidson and their community. A leader for Davidson on the West Coast, Ernie has served as president of the Los Angeles alumni chapter and has hosted numerous events in southern California over the years. His enthusiasm for Davidson is reflected in the leadership role he has taken in helping plan previous reunions. His appreciation for his Davidson professors led him to membership on the steering committee for the Charles E. Ratliff Fund. He has been a member of the Board of Visitors, a representative for the Davidson Alumni Admission Program, and an Annual Fund volunteer. He is currently a member of the Davidson Athletic Foundation board. In 1998, Ernie further demonstrated his dedication to Davidson when he established the Gail M. and Ernest G. Doe Professorship in Economics. Ernie said at the time, “Great professors and great teaching are what Davidson is all about and this was our chance to strengthen that fine tradition.” Because your life as a “Davidson Gentleman” serves as an example for all to follow, because you inspire others to your high standards of service and support, because you have always responded to alma mater’s call with dedication and enthusiasm, because Davidson College is this day and for all the days to come a stronger institution as a result of your commitment, the Davidson College Alumni Association honors you, Ernest Gordon Doe, class of 1969, with the Alumni Service Award, on the occasion of your 35th Reunion, April 24, 2004.
