Alumni Service Award

Charles L. Fonville '57
(Year Awarded--2003)

If leadership is defined, in part, by selfless devotion to others and a commitment to service, then Charles Lindsey Fonville is a role model for all to follow. This proud native of Burlington, N.C., arrived at Davidson in September of 1954 and since then has been an example of leadership and servanthood in every area of his life.

While Charlie entered Davidson in the fall of 1954, he graduated "early" with the class of 1957. He was a valued member in the Delta Kappa Chapter of Phi Gamma Delta.

Charlie Fonville

This alumnus who founded his own company in 1972 with "$2,000, a smile and a shoe shine" has come a long way. For his leadership as President of Fonville and Company, for his love and dedication to all of his "family of employees," for his vision and courage to make changes in his company, Charlie Fonville was named North Carolina Small Business Person of the Year for 2000. Charlie considers his business a family business in the truest sense as he is helped in the management of his business by his devoted children daughter Amy Owen and
Chuck '89.

He was a leader of the Class of 1957 for over a decade as Annual Fund Class Chair. He has served his college for several terms as a member of the Board of Visitors. He also has served as a member of the Parents Council, Regional Campaign Committee and Reunion Committees.

Charlie has clearly demonstrated his commitment to leadership and service in his community. He has served as chairman of the Administrative Board of Myers Park United Methodist Church; Chairman of the Board for Blowing Rock Methodist Summer Church; Chairman of the Greater Carolinas Chapter of the American Red Cross; Advisory Board of the Salvation Army; Mecklenburg County Council; Boys Scouts of America; past President and area Lieutenant Governor of Charlotte Civitan Club and has served Charlotte Country Day School as a Trustee and current member of the Board of Visitors.

His love for alma mater is further evidenced through his commitment to the Charles L. and Doris M. Fonville scholarship, which bears his name. Due to his generosity, sons and daughters of Davidson will be encouraged and supported through time!

Because you have served your family as a loving son, husband and father; because you bring honor and distinction to your beloved school in all of your actions; because you have been faithful in service and support of alma mater; because you have been a leader in every regard in your community, your work place and your college; and because your distinguished career is a source of pride for all whom you have touched, the Davidson College Alumni Association is proud to present to you, Charles Lindsey Fonville, Class of 1957, its Alumni Service Award on the occasion of your 45th reunion.
