John L. Stevenson '52
(Year Awarded--2002)

John Lovett Stevenson '52

Arriving at Davidson from Huntington, West Virginia in September of 1948, after having served as a Pharmacist's Mate Third Class in the United States Navy, John Lovett "Jack" Stevenson distinguished himself as a leader on campus. He lettered in tennis and was a member of the Kappa Alpha Order. His leadership skills became even more apparent when he was elected President of the Philanthropic Literary Society. He left Davidson with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology.

From Davidson, he went on to Richmond to study at Union Theological Seminary receiving the Bachelor of Divinity degree in 1955 and the Master of Theology in 1957, in preparation for his service as pastor of the Chadbourn Presbyterian Church in Chadbourn, North Carolina. Soon after he left to become Director of Camp Calvin, the Atlanta Presbytery Camp and Conference Center in Hampton, Georgia. From 1965 until 1968, he was the Protestant Chaplain at the United States Naval Ammunition Depot in Crane, Indiana. In the meantime he attended the University of Indiana, receiving his Masters of Arts in Education in 1967 and his Doctor of Philosophy in Education in 1968. He became an oft-honored member of the Clemson faculty as a professor of recreation and park administration and in 1982 was named chairman of Calhoun College, Clemson University's program of advanced academic training for 400 honors students. Simultaneously, Jack was also engaged in general therapy and marriage counseling at Redfern Health Center, was president of his own consulting firm, and was Tentmaking Pastor of Bethel Presbyterian Church in Walhalla, South Carolina.

Despite his commitment to teaching and public service throughout his career, Jack always found time for Davidson. For over twenty-six years from 1977-2002, he has been his Class Secretary calling his class members frequently to gather news. His intrepid pursuit of tidbits about his classmates has made his column widely read by his classmates and all those from his era. He has been a member of the Alumni Association Board, volunteered as an Annual Fund Class agent and is currently a member of his Fiftieth Class Reunion Committee.

Because you are a leader in every sense of the word; because you inspire others to your high standard of service through teaching and counseling; and because you have always responded to alma mater's call with dedication and enthusiasm, the Davidson College Alumni Association honors you, John Lovett Stevenson, with the Alumni Service Award, on the occasion of the Class of 1952's 50th Reunion, April 20, 2002.
