William Daniel Vinson, Sr. '48 (Year Awarded--1998) This Davidson Wildcat is not only an integral part of the college but is a lively and visible member of the Davidson community. His love for Davidson has never been capped but has overflowed to all as he gives of himself in numerous areas of service. The Davidson spirit is so instilled within his being that he and his wife chose to move their residence from Connecticut to 519 North Main Street where they now reside. In years since, he not only has continued to dedicate time and service to the college, but has shared with Davidson his warm presence, attending innumerable athletic events, becoming involved in the arts, and checking up on faculty and staff to make sure they stay on the job! He is the fourth generation of his family to be associated with Davidson. His grandfather once taught mathematics at the college and numerous other ancestors experienced Davidson as students. This Wildcat remembers those before him as he continues to give generously to several funds and scholarships which support and honor students interested in the fields of math, chemistry, and music. As the father of two grown children, he was thrilled when his son chose Davidson and he could proudly share with the fifth generation of his family the place he so loves. His generosity extends well past the borders of the college and into the community as he makes gifts of both time and resources to Davidson College Presbyterian Church. This man of service is well known for his involvement in all things Red and Black as he has immersed himself in the Davidson community. Because your warm presence and persistent involvement mean so much to all of us here in the Davidson community, and because your leadership and generosity of time and resources are an example and a gift to all members of the Davidson family both near and far, we honor you William Daniel Vinson, Sr., on the occasion of your 50th Reunion, and name you the worthy recipient of this Alumni Service Award.
