The Ne Ultra Society was created in 1972 by the college's Board of Trustees to honor those who make exceptional gifts to Davidson, forming the cornerstone of philanthropy upon which the excellence of the Davidson educational experience depends.
The name, Ne Ultra, taken from the college seal, translates from Latin as "none higher." By their example, Ne Ultra Society members encourage others in generous giving to the college.

In his generous bequest to Davidson College in 1855, Maxwell Chambers wrote, "I trust and pray that God, in His kind Providence, will build up said College and make it an ornament to the State of North Carolina and a blessing to the Country." The Maxwell Chambers Society bears the name of this early benefactor, whose bequest set the college on a new course, and for whom the Chambers Building was named.
