For U.S. Students Who Wish to Teach Abroad

Teaching abroad is a huge field providing many different opportunities. Finding a job is not always the most difficult part. Evaluating which overseas programs are reputable can be the most challenging aspect of the job search.

In general, avoid any organization that is reluctant to provide references or does not provide clear contact information, including a full mailing address. Don't be fooled by a slick website; it does not necessarily mean the organization is legitimate. Below are some reputable sites that you may find helpful in your job search:

JET Program
This site is easy to use and includes experiences by other students in Japan, basic info on living in Japan, and a list of requirements geared towards recent graduates.

Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages
TESOL's mission is to develop the expertise of its members and others as they teach English to non-English speakers and to help foster effective communication in diverse settings while respecting individuals' language rights.

WorldTeach
This widely used program helps with overseas placement and includes FAQs on teaching abroad. It lists jobs by country, program details, and applications.

Transitions Abroad
Transitions Abroad offers 23 years of experience publishing a bimonthly guide to practical information on affordable alternatives to mass tourism: living, working, studying, or vacationing alongside the people of the host country. Check out past and current articles, the online User-to-User forum, and the free electronic newsletter.

University of Michigan's International Center
An excellent site, it includes several links for teaching overseas.

International Schools Service
The site includes an IRC chat room for questions or comments, a directory of schools overseas, and FAQs on teaching overseas.

International Opportunities Program
Links to many different web resources for teaching abroad.
