Networking & Career Fairs

Networking is the #1 way to find a  job.  Over 80% of professional opportunities are not advertised so it is no wonder that networking is the most successful job search strategy.  It also involves helping others who come to you when seeking contacts, networking is a two-way street.  Click here for more information on networking

Networking involves making
      connections with people you

know or come into contact with,
      and asking them to introduce
      you to people they know.

Career/Job Fairs are excellent networking opportunities to make contacts that lead to formal interviews and job offers.

This is an opportunity to
meet and gather information about potential employers, find out what employers are looking for in candidates, gather information about the job market and learn what career fields are in demand.  Students can also learn about internship possibilities, and part-time jobs.

Career/Job Fairs are also a resource to learn about graduate
or professional schools including entrance requirements, application procedures, programs offered and financial assistance available.

Why attend a career fair?

  • You get to practice your interviewing skills.
  • You have the opportunity to see what employers are looking for in entry-level hires.
  • You are able to network and meet some very interesting people, particularly organizations that don’t interview on campus.

What should I expect/wear?

  • A large room, auditorium, or conference room with people milling about; very much like a college fair
  • Recruiters standing at tables with information about the organization, ready to talk with you or answer your questions
  • Appropriate attire for students to wear to a career fair is a suit.

How should I prepare?

  • Prepare a 1-minute “commercial” about yourself. This should explain who you are, what you’ve accomplished, and the type of position you’re looking for.
  • Wear appropriate clothes. Men typically wear jacket and ties; women typically wear a nice suit.
  • Have your resume up to par. Bring multiple copies with you (20 or more) on "good paper".
  • Practice your handshake. A good handshake is a firm one, but don’t break the other person’s hand!
  • Look the recruiter in the eye and smile, smile, smile!
  • Wear your name tag on the right side of your suit (your right side).
