Pass-Fail Options

PASS-FAIL REGULATIONS FOR ALL STUDENTS ENTERING AS FIRST-YEAR STUDENTS PRIOR TO  AUGUST, 2007 OR ENTERING AS TRANSFER STUDENTS IN AUGUST 2007:

1. Students may take a maximum of six credit-bearing courses on a pass-fail basis over a four-year period.  First-year students and sophomores may elect no more than one pass-fail course per academic year.  Juniors and seniors may elect no more than one pass-fail course per academic semester.  [Note: Ungraded transfer courses are not Pass/Fail courses and do not affect these maxima.]

2. Pass is defined as performance at the level of C-minus or higher.

3. Pass-fail courses may be used to fulfill all requirements except that they do not satisfy requirements in a major, minor, or concentration.  A major or minor department or the advisory committee of a concentration may make individual exceptions to this rule and may elect to set conditions on such an exception.

4. Students choose the pass-fail option by submitting to the Registrar's Office the Pass-Fail authorization form by 5:00 p.m. on the Friday of the ninth week of the semester.  A Pass/Fail authorization may not be withdrawn after the Pass/Fail deadline. No informal arrangement regarding pass-fail between the student and the instructor is valid.  When Pass-Fail grading is prescribed in the catalog description of a course, no form is necessary.

PASS-FAIL REGULATIONS FOR ALL STUDENTS ENTERING AS FIRST-YEAR STUDENTS IN AUGUST, 2007 OR SUBSEQUENTLY:

A student may elect to take no more than 3 courses Pass/Fail, with no more than one in any semester. Courses designated as Pass/Fail by a faculty member or department do not count towards the 3 course maximum, nor do transfer courses (which are ungraded, not P/F).

1.      Pass is defined as performance at the level of C-minus or higher.

2.      A student may elect to designate a course Pass/Fail up until the end of the ninth week of the last semester of his or her senior year, whether the course is one in progress or one in which a grade already has been recorded.  Such designation is made through the Registrar’s Office.  [NOTE: the Registrar's Office will establish procedures and forms for the purpose.  The procedures will of necessity stipulate a minimum period of time between a student's declaring a Pass/Fail decision and being able to have a transcript printed reflecting that decision.]

3.      Once a course has been designated Pass/Fail, the designation may not be reversed.

4.      Pass/Fail courses may be used to fulfill all requirements except that they do not satisfy requirements in a major, minor, or concentration.  A major or minor department or the advisory committee of a concentration may make individual exceptions to this rule and may elect to set conditions on such an exception.

This regulation takes effect beginning with first-year students matriculating in August, 2007.
