Backcountry Odyssey - Overview
The Backcountry Odyssey is an outdoor adventure of backpacking, canoeing and service. From your upperclass trip leaders you will learn the basic skills necessary to travel and live comfortably in the outdoors with minimal impact on the environment. You will rely on your new classmates for encouragement and cooperation as you work together to backpack in the Appalachian Mountains, set up camp, paddle through rapids or complete a service project. This is a vigorous program with all the challenges and rewards that come with time spent in remote areas.
Service Odyssey Overview
The Service Odyssey uses intensive community service to build relationships among participants, increase social awareness, and challenge individuals to work constructively within a group. The Service Odyssey reflects and enriches Davidson's commitment to develop the spirit of service within each student. Although the week is active, it is not as physically challenging as the Backcountry Odyssey.

Risks & Safety
The value of the Odyssey hinges on the presence of reasonable risks: The emotional risk of making new friends and the physical risks involved in working on a service site, backpacking in remote areas and paddling whitewater rivers.

2009 Odyssey Leaders
We are very proud of our odyssey leaders. The folks pictured in his area work with incoming students to create an often wonderful, sometimes remarkable eight day experience. We've tried to capture them in some of their finer moments for your edification and amusement.
Odyssey Gallery
The Odyssey is a great way for first-year students to get to know their classmates before the official orientation begins. We've posted a few pictures below to give you a peek at what the Odyssey experience is all about. Only about a third of the incoming class can fit in the Odyssey, so it's a good idea to register early with Bridget Ely or Gina Nossel in the College Union. 704-894-2522.
