NOTE for both AP and IB credits: the information below applies to students entering in Fall 2007. We reserve the right to change policies in the future. Davidson College normally awards one course credit for each Higher Level examination with a score or 6 or 7. Students may receive a maximum of four course credits from all sources of college credit prior to high school graduation. A student who has more than 4 acceptable credits may choose among them. All IB credits awarded count toward the 32 courses required for graduation. Most credits also apply toward distribution requirements; for applicability to major requirements, see departmental listings. The notation "C" on the generic number "199" indicates that the course counts for the appropriate distribution requirement; courses with other numbers count towards distribution in the same fashion as the on-campus course with that number; "199" courses, without the "C," do not yield distribution credit. Note that language courses numbered 201 do not count toward the distribution requirement in literature. (See items in parentheses in the table below. The notation "science" indicates distribution credit for science without lab -- even if, as is likely, your IB course did include laboratory work.) In 2007, scores of 6 or 7 on International Baccalaureate Higher Level examinations yield credit as follows. (Important notes, indicated by an asterisk*, follow the list.) | Art: Design | ART 199C (fine arts distribution req.) | | Biology | *BIO 104 (lab science) | | Chemistry | CHE 115 (lab science) | | Computer Science | CSC 121 (mathematics) | | Economics | ECO 101 (social sci.) | | English | *ENG 110 (literature) | | French | FRE 201 (for. lang.) | | German | GER 201 (for. lang.) | | Greek | GRE 201 (for. lang.) | | History: The Americas | *HIS 141 or 199C (history) | | History: Europe | HIS 122 (history) | | Latin | LAT 201 (for. lang.) | | Mathematics | MAT 130 & MAT 110 (math) | | Music Theory | MUS 101 (fine arts) | | Philosophy | PHI 110 (philosophy) | | Physics | *PHY 118 & PHY 119 (science) | | Psychology | PSY 101 (social sci.) | | Spanish | SPA 201 (for. lang.) |
*Notes: Biology: Biology 104 satisfies a lab science distribution requirement. It does not serve as a prerequisite to any other courses in Biology. English: course must have been taught in the English language. It satisfies the literature requirement, not the composition requirement. History: course number depends on specific course content. Will be credited as 199C pending recommendation from the Department of History. Physics: Credit for PHY 118 is forfeited by a student who elects to take PHY 120 or 130; credit for PHY 119 is forfeited by a student who elects to take PHY 220 or 230. PHY 118 and 119 do not satisfy the laboratory science distribution requirement, but count as science without lab.
