Advanced Placement ProgramNOTE for both AP and IB credits: the information below applies to students entering in Fall 2007 or later. We reserve the right to change policies in the future. (See also International Baccalaureate) Davidson College normally grants course credit for AP courses on which a student scores 4 or 5 to a maximum from all sources of four course credits achieved prior to entry into Davidson. (For Calculus AB or BC, a score of 3 yields credit. History, whether American or European, requires a 5.) A student who has more than 4 acceptable credits may choose among them. In Economics, French, Latin, and Spanish, a student taking more than one examination in the same subject receives a maximum of one credit. The "from all sources" pertaining to the maximum of four means AP, IB, and college courses taken during high school or in the summer following high school. As you probably know, for many AP tests neither you nor we will receive score reports before the end of June. When submitting your registration preferences, trust your instinct. If you believe you did well on an AP exam (probable high score), then register accordingly. If your score later proves a disappointment, there will be opportunity to change registration during Orientation. Please bear in mind, however, that for the credit actually to be awarded, the official score report from the College Board must be sent to Davidson. We must receive the report before the end of your first year at Davidson for the credit to be awarded, and having the report sent to Davidson is the student's responsibility. An AP credit is a credit in all instances as well as -- in chemistry, math, economics, psychology, and foreign languages -- a qualification for placement in the next course in a sequence. (Such placement is not really relevant in art history, English, or history; see notes regarding biology and physics.) All AP credits awarded (within the maximum of four) count toward the 32 courses required for graduation. Most AP credits also apply toward distribution requirements; for applicability to major requirements, see departmental listings. The notation "C" on the generic number "199" indicates that the course counts for the appropriate distribution requirement; courses with other numbers count towards distribution requirements in the same fashion as the on-campus course with that number; "199" courses without the "C" do not yield distribution credit. Foreign language courses numbered 201 do not satisfy the distribution requirement in literature. (See information in parentheses in the chart below; the notation "science" indicates distribution credit for science without lab -- even if, as is likely, your AP course did include laboratory work.) The award of credits for AP tests in Statistics and in Environmental Science carries an Unspecified departmental listing, and no placement in a next course is applicable . In 2007, scores for Advanced Placement tests will receive credit as follows. (Notes, indicated by an asterisk*, follow the list; they are important.)
*Notes: Biology: Biology 104 satisfies a lab science distribution requirement. It does not serve as a prerequisite to any other courses in Biology. Economics: ECO 199C credit is forfeited if student takes ECO 101 at Davidson. A total of 7 on both tests, with neither score below 3, yields credit for ECO 101. English: AP credit does not satisfy the composition requirement, which must be met by a W-course at Davidson. ENG 110 satisfies the literature requirement. Environmental science: unspecified science (non-lab) distribution requirement. Human Geography: unspecified credit; no distribution credit. Latin: may convert to LAT 201 on basis of the departmental placement test taken during the summer. Mathematics - Calculus BC: MAT 139, a credit used only for AP and other transfer credits, is forfeited if the student takes MAT 235 at Davidson. Current students: Note that the change awarding credit for the AB subset of Calculus BC takes effect for students entering in fall 2006, not retroactively. Physics: PHY 118 and 119 are listings specifically for AP or IB credits. Credit for 118 is forfeited by a student who elects to take PHY 120 or 130; credit for 119 is forfeited by a student who elects to take PHY 220 or 230. PHY 118 and 119 satisfy the science distribution requirement without lab unless evidence of significant lab work for either course is presented to the Physics Department chair, in which case the course will satisfy the lab science requirement. Statistics: satisfies neither mathematics nor any other distribution requirement.
