For purposes of distribution requirements, the Davidson curriculum is divided into six categories. All students must complete ten distribution requirements in order to graduate, with six of them completed in order to enter the junior year. The catalogue lists courses in each department or program that fulfill distribution requirements (formerly called core requirements). The requirements are:
| • LITERATURE: Requirement: one (1) course in literature (English or other language) Departments: English, Chinese, Classics, French, Spanish, German, Russian, or the Humanities Program (either 1-year or 2-year)
| • HISTORY: Requirement: one (1) course Department: History or the two-year Humanities Program
| • RELIGION and PHILOSOPHY: Requirement: two (2) courses, at least one in Religion Departments: Religion, Philosophy, two-year Humanities Program [Note: The two-year Humanities program (150, 151W, 250, 251), when completed, fulfills the requirement in literature, history, and both courses in religion and philosophy (as well as composition). The one-year Humanities program, Cultures and Civilizations (160, 161W), satisfies the literature requirement as well as the composition requirement.] | • FINE ARTS: Requirement: one (1) course Departments: Art, Music, and Theatre
| • NATURAL SCIENCES and MATHEMATICS: Requirement: three (3) courses, at least one in Mathematics and one science course with a lab Departments: Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics
