Assistive Services for Students

The Davidson College Library offers a variety of services and adaptive technology tools to improve students' access to library and other information resources.


Kurzweil 3000 Workstations
(Rooms G-19 and  G-25 on the ground floor)

These workstation have Kurzweil 3000, a program that converts documents to speech and text. This software application can help students with learning differences improve their reading speed,  comprehension, and study skills. It also allows users to create new documents and convert text documents to MP3 files.

The workstation also have:

  • Dragon Naturally Speaking
     
    This voice-activated software converts speech into text and can be used with many Windows-based applications, including Microsoft Office. It also allows users to bypass the keyboard and mouse to create and edit documents and control applications.
  • TextAloud
    This software allows users to convert text to spoken audio, which can be listened to on the PC or saved as an MP3 or WMA file. It can be used with Microsoft Word, Adobe pdf, and html files.
  • Scanner
  • Headphones with microphone

Note: These workstations are reserved for students previously identified by the Dean of Students office.


Stacks Retrieval Requests
Library staff are happy to retrieve books and journals from the stacks for students with disabilities.

Additional Adaptive Hardware
A BigKeys keyboard and Kensington Expert Mouse trackball are available for students' use. Please see a reference librarian for more information.
