Born and raised in Pakistan, Rizwan Zamir teaches in the area of Islamic studies. Interested in Islamic intellectual history and culture in general, his research includes Islamic philosophy, ethics, mysticism, Shi'ism, contemporary Islamic thought, Islam in South Asia and comparative mysticism. His graduate training also involved sustained study of Christianity (especially the Orthodox tradition) and active engagement in inter-faith dialogue groups such as Scriptural Reasoning. He is the author of peer-reviewed articles "Descartes and al-Ghazali: Doubt, Certitude and Light" in Islamic Studies, Tafsir al-Qur'an bi 'l Qur'an: The Hermeneutics of Imitation and Adab in Ibn ‘Arabi's Interpretation of the Qur'an" (forthcoming, Islamic Studies), and a book chapter for The Bloomsbury Companion to Islamic Studies (edited by Clinton Bennett, forthcoming) that surveys the western academic study of Shi'ite Islam. Since March 2012, he co-chairs the Study of Islam section of the American Academy of Religion, Southeast Region. Mr. Zamir joined the department of Religion in fall 2010.
