Born and raised in Malaysia, Professor Lye teaches in the area of East Asian religions, with emphasis on the religions of China and its historical and cultural orbit. His graduate training also included sustained study of Tibetan religion and Islam (Shi’ism). Professor Lye’s current research interests include Chinese Buddhist ritual and liturgical traditions, Buddhist foodways and religions of Chinese diasporic communities. He is currently working on a book-length publication on ghost-feeding rituals in Chinese Buddhism. Aside from teaching and research, Professor Lye spent the past few years of his professional life organizing Buddhist Studies conferences both in the U.S. and abroad and leading three study-groups to Tibet and Ladakh (India). Courses he intends to offer in the future will examine topics such as Pure Land Buddhism, Asian religious foodways, Tibetan Buddhist culture and genres of Buddhist literature.
