At Davidson since 1982, Professor Mahony teaches courses on Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam and topics in the comparative study of religion and has special research interest in the contemplative dimensions of religions originating in India. He is an active participant in Davidson's South Asian Studies Program.
Prof. Mahony’s publications include The Artful Universe: An Introduction to the Vedic Religious Imagination (State University of New York Press) and, as co-author, Meditation Revolution: A History and Theology of the Siddha Yoga Lineage (Agama Press). | He has been a recipient of a National Endowment for the Humanities fellowship and was an editor and major contributor to the 16-volume Encyclopedia of Religion, First Edition (Macmillan Press), which received the Hawkins Prize and the Dartmouth Medal from the American Library Association for the best work in any category of publishing. He is a former member of the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Religion and of its Executive Committee and is a Past President of the American Academy of Religion Southeast Region. Currently he serves as President and member of the Board of Directors of the Muktabodha Indological Research Institute.
