AP & IB credit

Advanced Placement credit for Calculus and Computer Science

Calculus

Students with scores of 3 or higher on either the AB or the BC examination are eligible for AP credit for MAT 130, Calculus I, accounting for one course in the core requirement in Natural Science and Mathematics. These students are eligible to take MAT 135 at Davidson and are encouraged to do so if they are interested in pursuing their study of calculus. Students who have scored 4 or higher on the BC examination are eligible to receive credit for both MAT 130 and a second course in mathematics (MAT 139---see note below). These students should contact a member of the Department of Mathematics to discuss the allocation of credit and appropriate placement, although if they wish to pursue their study of calculus and have not studied multivariable calculus, MAT 135 will almost certainly be the most appropriate course for them to take.

Notes:

  1. MAT 139: This course number is used for the second calculus course associated with the AP Calculus BC curriculum, and for corresponding transfer courses. Since this material is included among the topics of our MAT 135 & 235 courses, the MAT 139 credit earned for a qualifying score on the AP Calculus BC examination is forfeited when the student enrolls in MAT 235.
  2. AB subscore: Students with an AB subscore of 4 or 5 on the Calculus BC examination are eligible for MAT 130 credit.

Computer Science

Students with scores of 4 or 5 on either the A or the AB examination are eligible for one AP credit for CSC 121, Programming and Problem Solving, accounting for one course of the core requirement in Natural Science and Mathematics. Students with scores of 4 or 5 on the AB examination may also receive additional AP credit (CSC 199C) and should consult a member of the Mathematics Department to determine the allocation of credit and appropriate placement.

Statistics

The Mathematics Department does not offer a course corresponding to the AP Statistics course. The college grants credit for UNS 199 (UNS: department unspecified) for a score of 4 or 5 on the AP Statistics examination. UNS 199 does not satisfy any core or major requirement.

International Baccalaureate credit for Mathematics and Computer Science

Finite Mathematics and Calculus

Students with scores of 6 or 7 on the mathematics higher level examination are eligible for credit for MAT 110, Finite Mathematics, and MAT 130, Calculus I, accounting for two courses in the core requirement in Natural Science and Mathematics. These students are eligible to take MAT 135 at Davidson and are encouraged to do so if they are interested in pursuing their study of calculus.

Computer Science

Students with scores of 6 or 7 on the computer science higher level examination are eligible for credit for CSC 121, Programming and Problem Solving, accounting for one course of the core requirement in Natural Science and Mathematics.
