The Registrar maintains official pages about Pre-College Credits and AP and IB transfer equivalents, detailed below for mathematics and computer science. Students are always encouraged to consult with a member of the Mathematics Department for advice on the allocation of credit and appropriate placement.
Advanced Placement credit for Calculus and Computer Science
Calculus
Students with scores of 3 or higher on either the AB or the BC examination are eligible for AP credit for MAT 111, Calculus I, accounting for one course in the core requirement in Natural Science and Mathematics. (Students with an AB subscore of 4 or 5 on the Calculus BC examination are also eligible for MAT 111 credit, regardless of the overall BC score.) These students are not eligible to take MAT 111 and will forfeit this credit if they take MAT 112 at Davidson, although students scoring a 3 may elect this route if they would like to build a stronger foundation in calculus. The next course after MAT 111 is usually MAT 113, Calculus II.
Students who have scored 4 or higher on the BC examination are eligible to receive credit for both MAT 111 and MAT 113, the latter being the first course required for a Mathematics major. The next course after MAT 113 is usually either MAT 160 Calculus III or MAT 150 Linear Algebra. Both of these courses fulfill requirements in a Mathematics major and either may be taken first.
Computer Science
Students with scores of 4 or 5 on the A examination are eligible for one AP credit for CSC 121, Programming and Problem Solving, accounting for one course of the core requirement in Natural Science and Mathematics.
Students with scores of 4 or 5 on the AB examination are eligible to receive credit for both CSC 121 and CSC 221, Data Structures. Both courses are part of the Computer Science Concentration and the latter may count as one of the electives in the Mathematics major.
Statistics
The Mathematics Department does not offer a course corresponding to the AP Statistics course. The college grants credit for UNS 199 (UNS: department unspecified) for a score of 4 or 5 on the AP Statistics examination. UNS 199 does not satisfy any core or major requirement.
International Baccalaureate credit for Mathematics and Computer Science
Calculus
Students with scores of 6 or 7 on the mathematics higher level examination are eligible for credit for MAT 111, Calculus I, and MAT 113, Calculus II, accounting for two courses in the core requirement in Natural Science and Mathematics. The next course after MAT 113 is usually either MAT 160 Calculus III or MAT 150 Linear Algebra. Both of these courses fulfill requirements in a Mathematics major and either may be taken first
Computer Science
Students with scores of 6 or 7 on the computer science higher level examination are eligible for credit for CSC 121, Programming and Problem Solving, accounting for one course of the core requirement in Natural Science and Mathematics.
