Kimbrough Professor John Swallow has taught in the Department of Mathematics since 1994 and in the Humanities Program since 2001. After majoring in mathematics and English literature at Sewanee, he wrote a thesis on Galois theory at Yale. With the support of three grants from the National Science Foundation, he has authored or co-authored two dozen research articles, several with students, as well as an undergraduate text, Exploratory Galois Theory (Cambridge UP, 2004), and expository pieces for a variety of audiences. He served for six years as trustee of his alma mater and will serve Davidson as Vice Chair Pro Tem of the Faculty (highest elected office) for a three year term 2009-2012.
