Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Is college credit available?
Davidson College is not able to provide college credit for this Institute. In compliance with the College Board, Participants with 100% attendance records at the Institute will receive 3.0 CEUs and a certificate of completion. Participants who attend 90% or more of the Institute will receive a certificate that they participated in the workshop.

Is there on-campus housing?
For an additional fee of $275 per person, room and board are available to those who wish to stay on campus during the Institute. Housing will be in a college residence hall. Participants will be in a single room but will share a bathroom.
In addition to the meals covered by the tuition, the housing fee includes breakfast Monday through Friday and dinner Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. The dormitory rooms have in-room controlled air-conditioning, and phone/internet connections. Provided linens include one set of sheets and towels, one pillow and blanket. All rooms are smoke free.

Are meals included in the tuition fee?
Yes, lunch is provided Monday through Thursday and is included in the tuition fee. A special participant dinner on Thursday evening is also included in the tuition fee.

Where will my class be held?
Courses are held in the Chambers Building. All science courses (Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, and Physics) are held in various buildings around campus, depending on where the labs are. The exact class location will be emailed in June to each participant.

What airport should I fly into? How do I get to Davidson College?
You should plan to fly into Charlotte Douglas International Airport. Taxi service and rental car services are available at the airport. To view a list of car/taxi services click here. Participants are required to make their own transportation arrangements from the airport. Driving directions will be included in the final confirmation packet e-mailed to each participant in June.

I sent in my registration form and I have not heard anything back. Am I registered?
You should receive an initial confirmation e-mail within two weeks of receipt of your registration. If you have not received anything, please call 704-894-2986 to confirm that your registration form has been received. We receive calls each year in June from individuals who have submitted paperwork through their school system that never makes it here, or who have mailed it in and we never receive it. If you don't here from us, call! Final Institute packets, that will include a map, driving directions, classroom locations, what to bring, what to wear, etc, will be e-mailed after June 1st.

Is there still space? The registration deadline has not passed.
We are required to strictly limit the number of registrants for the classes. Any subject that becomes full will be posted on our web site.

What do I need to bring?
If there are specific items you need to bring for your subject, the participant letter from your instructor that you will receive in your confirmation e-mail will tell you. Otherwise, bring something to write with, something to write on, something to carry all the books you will get, your school calendar, any text book that you have questions about or would like to share, any lessons or activities that you want to share. If you have a laptop, you are encouraged to bring it. Also, since you will be sitting all day (for the most part), you may want to bring a cushion to provide some padding to the chairs.

What is the dress code?
Davidson in June is hot and humid. The buildings will be hot or cold (we don't control the temperature!). We encourage you to bring a light sweater in case the classroom gets cool. Dress so that you will be comfortable sitting for much of the day, often in those little chairs with the arm desks, and walking outside in the heat. Dress to be comfortable.

What else do I need to know?
Please keep in mind that the Davidson College is a residential campus. What does that mean for you? It means that you might not be able to park near the building that your class is in. You should be prepared to walk to get to your building, to get to lunch etc. You will receive a number of text books to take back with you. Some subjects will receive more than others, but typically everyone will receive at least 2 different titles. Keep this in mind when packing, or be prepared to ship them back.
