Melodie Mendez '13, a CIS major, has been recognized several times for her commitment to civic engagement and serving her peers and the larger community.
At the Fall 2012 Convocation, she was awarded the college's Goodwin-Exxon Award for high standards of character, friendliness, and consideration for others. Mendiz is a Bonner Scholar from Bronx, N.Y. One of the most respected leaders in her class, she is president of the Organization of Latin American Students, vice president of Delta Sigma Theta sorority and a resident adviser on the Spanish Culture floor in Duke Residence Hall.
In addition, she was one of 17 North Carolina students to win the Community Impact Award from Campus Compact. See the full press release for more information.
Mendez is working with Professors Maiz-Pena (Spanish) and Samson (Anthropology) to study "Cultural and Environmental Sustainability for Latino Communities through Food Trucks."
