F. Anderson (Andy) Sherrill, Jr. '62 (Awarded 2012)
When young F. Anderson Sherrill, Jr. settled on Davidson for his college education, he knew he'd be close to his family's hometown of Statesville, just twenty miles away. Over the years, that geographic closeness has grown into much more.
At Davidson, Andy was known for leadership and teamwork. He was an athlete, playing basketball and tennis-co-captaining the varsity tennis team his senior year, when he was runner-up in singles and doubles in the Southern Conference Tournament. He served his fraternity Phi Delta Theta as assistant rush chairman, and brought his social and athletics pursuits together in the great "All Inter-Fraternity 1960-61 Flickerball Team."
Andy's business and economics major and his active membership in the Business-Economics Association presaged his successful career as a Statesville business leader. There, he led the Sherrill Furniture Co. and later the Sherrill Lumber Co., sharing his leadership and expertise in the community he loves. He was a bank director and a director of the Chamber of Commerce. He chaired the Statesville Civil Service Board and was president of the Iredell County Day Care Center for Handicapped Children. Andy's devotion to worthy causes has been rivaled only by his devotion to family-his own as well as the larger Davidson family. He visited Davidson often to see his mother Margaret Armstrong Sherrill, a former Board of Visitors member who moved to The Pines at Davidson in her later years. Likewise, when Andy's beloved younger brother and fellow alumnus Jack '67 fell ill and moved to The Pines, Andy was at his side regularly until his passing. The two brothers even made local news with their traditional cider pressing at The Pines!
Through it all, Andy stayed close to the college in other ways, too. He shared magazine subscriptions with President John Kuykendall. He reserved spots in between team practice to play tennis in the Knobloch Tennis Center. He and his family established a tennis scholarship in support of today's Davidson scholar-athletes. Andy served as Annual Fund class agent for a decade and a half, as a Davidson Athletic Foundation agent, as president of the Statesville Alumni Chapter and as a ringleader for class reunions through the years.
He and his lovely wife Cummins even went so far as to host a 20th Reunion gathering for the college at their home in Statesville-how many of you remember that? Cummins and Andy's son Flake makes them proud as a member of the Davidson College Class of 1990, further strengthening Andy's Davidson family legacy, alongside an uncle and cousins who also attended here.
Because your enthusiasm for Davidson is catching; because your sense of duty is innate; and because you represent your college loyally, with winsomeness and zeal, the Davidson College Alumni Association honors you, F. Anderson Sherrill, Jr., Davidson College Class of 1962, and presents you with the Alumni Service Award on the occasion of your 50th Reunion
