After graduating with a degree in English from Davidson, I somehow wound up at a small investment firm in Charlotte.
I work with the investment team and manage much of the daily interaction we have with our private managers. I handle all legal documents for my team, work with our operations team to ensure that capital is sent and received as expected by our managers, and am responsible for various administrative tasks. Although my current job may not be the traditional choice for an English major, my undergraduate education prepared me extremely well for the business world.
I did not graduate with much knowledge about finance or investing, but I had very well-developed communication and writing skills. Early on, my colleagues took notice, and they grew confident that I could interface with clients and managers in a clear, concise, and polite manner. I interact with CEOs and Presidents of major funds and corporations every day and consider myself very lucky to feel confident in my writing and grammar skills. As silly as it may seem to some, knowing proper punctuation and subject-verb agreement can make all the difference!
