Concert Series Announces New Artistic Director & New Season

This past year, the Davidson College Music Department welcomed cellist Alan Black to the Davidson family. Our new Artist Associate in Cello and Chamber Music has become an integral part of the Music Department’s team, and has also taken the post as the Artistic Director for our yearly Concert Series in Tyler-Tallman Hall. The Concert Series aims to bring world class musicians to Davidson’s campus several times a year; we feel that it is essential our students should have access to musical performances at the highest level, to enhance their education and enrich their Davidson experience. Davidson faculty, staff, and community members are also able to take advantage of these special performances each year for a small fee.

This upcoming year, however, Alan Black plans to take the Concert Series to new heights. We will launch our new season on Saturday, September 8th at 8pm with acclaimed pianist Jon Nakamatsu. As a former Van Cliburn Gold Medalist, Jon is an internationally recognized concert artist, and his performance will surely help usher in a new and exciting season! His appearance in Charlotte is made possible by a generous contribution from the Adams Foundation. Following the concert the Davidson College Friends of the Arts will be hosting a reception to give everyone the chance to meet this wonderful artist.

The 2012-13 season in Tyler-Tallman Hall also includes performances from the Akerman-Teixeira Guitar Duo, pianist Phillip Bush & members of the Charlotte Symphony performing the great Dvorak A Major Piano Quintet, the Contiguglia Piano Duo, Fresh Ink - a mixed instrumental ensemble with percussion, and a return of the Davidson Piano Trio with violinist Rosemary Furniss, pianist Dana Protopopescu, and cellist Alan Black.

We are also teaming up with Friends of the Arts and the Smith Artist Series to offer a unique collaborative performance by students from Davidson’s Music Department and renowned musicians Daniel Bernard Roumain and Laurelyn Dossett in late September.
