Advanced Placement -- Class of 2016

NOTE:  We reserve the right to change policies in the future.

Beginning with the class entering in August 2013 (Class of '17 and later), no more than two such credits attained prior to matriculation at Davidson (or, for transfer students, as a degree candidate at another college) may be applied to the satisfaction of distribution requirements. The student may elect which two to apply in such a fashion and may change that selection as late as the beginning of the spring semester of the senior year. Selection is made or changed by official notification to the Registrar's Office.

Davidson College normally grants course credit, counting toward the 32 courses needed for graduation,  for AP exams on which a student scores 4 or 5 to a maximum from all sources of four course credits achieved prior to entry into Davidson. (For Calculus AB or BC, a score of 3 yields credit. History, whether American or European, requires a 5.) A student who has more than 4 acceptable credits may choose among them. In Economics, French, and Spanish, a student taking more than one examination in the same subject receives a maximum of one credit. The "from all sources" pertaining to the maximum of four means AP, IB, and college courses taken during high school or in the summer following high school.

For the credit actually to be awarded, the official score report from the College Board must be sent to Davidson. We must receive the report before the end of your first year at Davidson for the credit to be awarded, and having the report sent to Davidson is the student's responsibility.

An AP credit often also serves as a qualification for placement in the next course in a sequence. (Such placement is not really relevant in art history, English, or history; see notes regarding biology and physics.) All AP credits awarded (within the maximum of four) count toward the 32 courses required for graduation.  The notation "C" on the generic number "199" indicates that the course potentially counts for an appropriate distribution requirement; courses with  numbers other than 199 (or 199c) may count towards distribution requirements in the same fashion as the on-campus course with that number.

The award of credits for AP tests in Statistics carries an Unspecified departmental listing, and no placement in a next course is applicable .

In 2012 and later, scores for Advanced Placement tests will receive credit as follows. A student may not receive credit through AP for a regular Davidson course (not one numbered 199 or 199C) and receive credit a second time by taking that course at Davidson.

(Notes, indicated by an asterisk*, follow the list; they are important.)

*AP Notes:

Biology: Biology 107 satisfies a natural science distribution requirement. It does not serve as a prerequisite to any other courses in Biology.

Calculus: Credit for MAT 111 will be forfeited if the student takes MAT 112 (Calculus I and Modeling).

Economics: ECO 199C credit is forfeited if student takes ECO 101 at Davidson. A total of 7 on both tests, with neither score below 3, yields credit for ECO 101.

English: AP credit does not satisfy the composition requirement, which must be met by a course at Davidson (WRI 101 or the Humanities Program). ENG 110 satisfies the requirement in literary studies, creative writing, and rhetoric.

Environmental science:  Distribution requirement in liberal studies, not natural science.

Latin: May convert to LAT 201 on basis of the departmental placement test taken during the summer.

Physics: PHY 118 and 119 are listings specifically for AP or IB credits. Credit for 118 is forfeited by a student who elects to take PHY 120 or 130; credit for 119 is forfeited by a student who elects to take PHY 220 or 230. PHY 118 and 119 satisfy a liberal studies distribution requirement -- not natural science -- unless evidence of significant lab work for either course is presented to the Physics Department chair, in which case the course will satisfy the natural science requirement.

Statistics: Satisfies neither mathematical/quantitative thought nor any other distribution requirement.
