Hansford Epes, a longtime German and Humanities professor who has been the college's Registrar for the past 10 years, has announced he will retire at the end of the 2011-12 academic year.
In a note to faculty this week, Vice President for Academic Affairs Clark Ross said Epes will remain on the job this year to help President Carol Quillen, and to help implement the college's recently adopted new distribution requirements.
Dean Ross said in his note:
"Hansford's official association with Davidson began in the fall semester of 1957, when he enrolled as a student. In these ensuing 55 years in many capacities he has enriched the life of Davidson College -- its students, faculty, and staff. I can assure you that we will have opportunity to celebrate these many accomplishments and to thank Hansford in the coming months."
Associate Dean Pat Sellers will pick a search committee and help lead a search a new Registrar.
Davidson is a highly selective independent liberal arts college for 1,900 students located 20 minutes north of Charlotte in Davidson, N.C. Since its establishment in 1837 by Presbyterians, the college has graduated 23 Rhodes Scholars and is consistently regarded as one of the top liberal arts colleges in the country. Through The Davidson Trust, the college became the first liberal arts institution in the nation to replace loans with grants in all financial aid packages, giving all students the opportunity to graduate debt-free. Davidson competes in NCAA athletics at the Division I level, and a longstanding Honor Code is central to student life at the college.
