Alumni Service Award

Fred Jackson Ballenger '71
(Awarded 2011)

A native son of Reidsville, North Carolina, Jack Ballenger arrived to Davidson in the fall of 1967. While at Davidson, Jack played on the football team and was a member of the D Club and a 1967 Tangerine Bowl representative. Jack joined Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity and excelled in the classroom by earning membership into Alpha Epsilon Delta (premedical) and Gamma Sigma Epsilon (chemistry) honorary societies.

After Davidson, Jack earned an M.D. from the Wake Forest University School of Medicine in 1975 and devoted his career to the field of nephrology. Jack and his wife, Winn, reside in Roanoke VA, where they raised their daughters Ann and Currie, both of whom are Davidson alumnae. As a medical professional, Jack has served in leadership positions with the Roanoke Valley Academy of Medicine, the Medical Society of Virginia, the Physicians Care of Virginia and the University of Virginia School of Medicine, Roanoke/Salem Program as a clinical faculty member.

Over the years, Jack has remained a loyal alumnus and consistent supporter of Davidson College. Jack has served innumerable volunteer roles for Davidson. He was the 2008 Chair for Fideles, was an Annual Fund Class Chair, and is now 1971's 40th Reunion Gift Chair. In addition, Jack has served as a Davidson Alumni Admissions Program team member, member of the Alumni Association Board, co-chair of the Western Virginia Regional Campaign Committee and has been host to comprehensive campaign events and activities. Jack and Winn have supported a number of areas within the college - especially athletics. In 2005, they established the Robert A. Currie Athletic Scholarship in honor of Winn's father, Robert A. Currie '47, who served as business manager at Davidson for over 25 years. Jack and Winn represent the essence and importance of service to one's community, which is a cornerstone of Davidson College's mission.

Jack, your life of leadership and service exemplifies the Davidson spirit. For your contagious enthusiasm for all things Davidson, for your willingness to eagerly respond to Davidson's call, for demonstrating loyalty to Davidson through your words and deeds, for entrusting your two daughters to Davidson, for your devotion to the Roanoke community, and most of all for your exceptional leadership and service to alma mater, the Davidson College Alumni Association is proud to honor you with the Alumni Service Award.
