The Annual Davidson Internship Challenge

Davidson Internship Challenge Logo

We are currently seeking alumni, families and friends of Davidson who are willing to join the second annual Davidson Internship Challenge! Our goal is to post and encourage applications for 125 internship opportunities generated by alumni, families and friends of Davidson during the 2012-13 academic year.

Why the Challenge is Important

Internships are the single most important way for employers to identify future employees and for Davidson students to explore the world of work. According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), new graduates who have completed at least one internship during their undergraduate education are significantly more likely to receive job offers than those with no internship experience. In this difficult economic climate, internships become even more valuable in helping Davidson students obtain valuable work experience and explore career options.

Contribute to the Challenge

You can contribute to the Davidson Internship Challenge by doing ONE or more of the following:

  • Serving as a resource for students applying for the internship program at your organization (this could mean answering questions about your experience with the organization or reviewing a resume)
  • Taking an active role in facilitating Davidson student applications through the internship host's selection process (this could include answering questions about Davidson and the high-quality education that students receive here or encouraging your HR department to interview at Davidson)
  • Creating or helping to arrange an internship specifically for a Davidson student

Participating in the challenge does not suggest that you are guaranteeing an internship to a Davidson student. Your organization is welcome to consider applications from other students and schools.

We are happy to post internships in a variety of industry areas and geographical locations.  Career fields of particular interest to Davidson students include education, nonprofit administration, government and public policy, law, banking and finance, management and strategy consulting, science and medical research, marketing, the arts, and communications.

Paid internships are strongly encouraged, and often generate up to five times as many applicants as unpaid internships do, but high-quality, unpaid internships are allowed as a part of the challenge.

We are currently focusing on Summer 2013 internships.  We hope to post the majority of the Internship Challenge internships for this summer by March 1, 2013.

History of the Challenge

Last year, we sought to highlight 100 internships as part of the challenge. We surpassed our goal with a total of 121 internships posted by 117 participants, resulting in 75 confirmed internships!  See the list of last year's participants, and read about student experiences at two Internship Challenge sites, Dixon Hughes Goodman and  Capital Group Companies, on our blog.

Get Involved!

Our Assistant Director for Internships, Ashley Neff, is available to work with you or the internship coordinator at the organization you are representing to ensure that the internship is advertised effectively to the Davidson student body. She can also answer questions about internship structure and pay.

If you have an internship ready to post, you can either create an account on WildcatLink (our job and internship posting system) and add the position, or e-mail Ashley a basic position description (including internship description/duties, qualifications, time commitment, and desired application materials).  If a description of the internship is online, e-mail her the link to that information.  Also let her know in which of the three ways outlined above you are able to help.
