COMMENCEMENT WEEKEND SCHEDULE

 

[If a rain plan is in effect on Sunday morning, signs will be posted on Chambers doors and at the Union, and a message will be posted at 704-894-2000 and on the College’s web page, www.davidson.edu.  For specific rain plans, see below.]

 

FRIDAY, MAY 13

9 p.m.                         

Senior Soirée, a concert by student performers and the Jazz Ensemble in the Alvarez College Union

 

SATURDAY, MAY 14

2 p.m.

ROTC Commissioning in Tyler-Tallman Hall of Sloan Music Center. Speaker will be Major David M. Rozelle ’95, who lost a leg in combat in Iraq and later returned to the battlefield. 

 

4 p.m.

Required meeting for graduating seniors in Duke Family Performance Hall to rehearse for Commencement. Students should wear caps and gowns. (In case of rain, students should gather on the ground floor of Baker Sports Center.)

                                   

4:45 p.m.

Baccalaureate Service in  Belk Arena. Speakers will be The Reverends Richard and Elizabeth Deibert, parents of graduating senior Emily Deibert '11.

 

6 p.m.

President’s Supper in Knobloch Tennis Center. Tickets are required.

 

7:15 p.m.

Chorale Concert featuring the Davidson College Chorale in Davidson College Presbyterian Church. There is no admission charge.

                       

8 p.m. to 10 p.m.        

Open Houses in various campus locations for families to meet faculty and staff members.

                       

10 p.m.

Senior Class Party in the greenhouse parking lot behind the senior apartments. Parents and other guests of seniors are welcome to attend.

 

SUNDAY, MAY 15

9 a.m.

Required gathering of graduating seniors in Lilly Family Gallery. Graduates should arrive in caps and gowns and sit in the seat designated with their name. In case of rain, students should report to the wrestling room and dance room on the bottom floor of Baker Sports Center.

 

9:50 a.m.

Academic Procession for students and faculty across front campus, or in case of rain across the floor of Belk Arena in Baker Sports Complex. Tickets are not required, and there is no reserved seating.

 

10 a.m.                       

Commencement  begins. President John Kuykendall will preside over the ceremony. It will include presentation of degrees to 436 graduates, announcement of First Honor and Second Honor and the Class Gift, brief remarks by President Emeritus Tom Ross ’72, presentation of Hunter-Hamilton Love of Teaching Awards to two faculty members, presentation of Algernon Sydney Sullivan Awards to a student and a community member, and presentation of honorary degrees to architect Graham Gund and philanthropist Paul Leonard ‘62. Commencement usually concludes by 12:30 p.m. 

 

The Davis Café in the Union will be open Saturday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.  The Bookstore will be open Friday 8:15 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Sunday 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Cats on Main will be open Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. 

 

Streaming video of Sunday's Commencement ceremony will be available on the Web for friends and family members for whom the trip to campus is not possible.
