Resources for Assistant Teachers

The Departments of French and Francophone Studies, German Studies, and Hispanic Studies rely on student assistant teachers (AT) to reinforce and complement the work done in their elementary and intermediate language courses. ATs are expected to teach two 50-minute sessions per week. The hourly pay rate for ATs is higher than for any other student job -- $9/ 9.50/ 10/ 10.50, depending on experience -- and we will pay you for up to one hour of preparation for every hour you teach.

Serving as an AT is one of the most important and rewarding student jobs on campus. In order to be considered, all candidates are required to attend a workshop where they are trained in form- and content-based teaching techniques. Selection is competitive. Criteria include dependability and professionalism, language proficiency, mastery of the techniques, classroom presence, interest in foreign language pedagogy, and general promise as assistant teacher.

At the workshop, all students will receive a copy of the AT Handbook which contains teaching guidelines and a vast repository of  classroom activities. The administrative documents contained in the Handbook are linked below.
