Dr. Hess regularly teaches economic principles, intermediate macroeconomic theory, mathematical economics, economic development, and economic growth & sustainable development. He serves as president of Nepal Orphans Home, a 501(c)3 public charity, with operations in Nepal. He recieve his bachelors of Arts from Bowdoin and his PhD from UNC at Chapel Hill. He and Prof. Clark Ross coauthored Principles of Economics: An Analytical Approach (West, 1993) and Economic Development: Theories, Evidence, and Policies (Dryden Press, 1997), and he wrote Population Growth and Socioeconomic Progress in Less Developed Countries (Praeger, 1988) and Using Mathematics in Economic Analysis (Prentice Hall, 2002) . His recent research projects have included papers on sustainable development and indentured child labor.
