During the summer of 2010, a group of Davidson students, which included two Belk Scholars, a Bonner Scholar and six recipients of Dean Rusk fellowship awards traveled to Damascus. They lived with families in the Old City and attended classes at Damascus University. Although they were all extremely busy with coursework and discovering their new surroundings, they took the Davidson spirit of service with them to Damascus. Among their activities were: volunteer work at the UNDP, teaching English in a Palestinian camp, and volunteer work at a home for handicapped children.
