Davidson, NC - Sally G. McMillen, the Mary Reynolds Babcock Professor at Davidson College, will be a featured speaker at the March 22 Women's History Month Celebration at the North Carolina Museum of History in Raleigh. The event will feature a conversation between McMillen and Jill Dinwiddie, executive director of the North Carolina Council for Women. They will discuss women's suffrage and current challenges.

A member of the Davidson faculty since 1988, McMillen is a specialist in Southern and women's history. A widely published author, her latest book is "Seneca Falls and the Origins of the Women's Rights Movement," which was published in 2008 by Oxford University Press. The book, part of Oxford's Pivotal Moments in American History series, is a scholarly examination of the 1848 Seneca Falls convention, a key event in the suffragist movement. The book was highly praised by reviewers.

Gov. Bev Perdue will welcome participants to the Women's History Month celebration. She will be introduced by Julianne Malveaux, president of Bennett College in Greensboro. The event also will feature a performance by Stella, an all-female a cappella group from Durham. The evening will close with a reception and booksigning.

The March 22 Women's History celebration begins at 6:30 p.m. at the N.C. Museum of History. The event is collaboration between the Museum, the North Carolina Council for Women and the Wake County Commission for Women. Walks-in are welcome, but to register please call the Museum at 919-807-7900. Those interested in the event but unable to attend may view it online during a live stream at www.nccfwdvc.com.
