Math Coffee: "When is a knot not a knot?" Henry Segerman, Univ. of Texas at Austin

When: February 04, 2010   4:00 pm -  5:00 pm

Where:  Chambers 3068 ,   Chambers Building

Speaker:  Dr. Henry Segerman, University of Texas at Austin

Ticket Required: No

Given two pictures of knots, how can we tell whether they are actually distorted pictures of the same knot? This is one of the central problems of knot theory, and has been tackled using knot invariants. I'll explain what a knot invariant is, and then talk about two examples: tricolourability, and the much more powerful Kauffman polynomial X.

We will gather in Mathematics Hall at 3:45 P.M. for our traditional light snacks.
