Being Involved
Carlos Alvarez discovered Davidson College when his daughter, Malu, became a student in 1998, and over the years he has become increasingly involved with the life of the college. He and his wife, Malu, were members of the Parents Council, and Carlos Alvarez joined the Board of Trustees in 2003.

Brewmaster
A native of Mexico who now makes his home in San Antonio, Texas, Alvarez is the founder and President of The Gambrinus Company, which owns and operates a number of breweries, and markets and distributes beers throughout the U.S., Australia and Italy.

An International Change Agent
A gift of $10 million has created the Alvarez Scholars Program, which will support the college's longtime commitment to global education by providing financial support for international students.

"I feel that our scholarship initiative will help the college attract outstanding students from all over the world," says Carlos.

Good Wishes
In 2001, Davidson dedicated the Alvarez College Union, made possible by a gift from the couple, which immediately became the "living room" of the campus.

At the building's dedication ceremony, Alvarez recalled his naturalization as a United States citizen. He offered the building, and the sense of community that will grow inside it, as his family's gift to the United States, telling Davidson's students, "I wish that this be a friendly place where your relationships with your fellow students develop and transform into enduring friendships that enrich your lives forever."
