Davidson College President Tom Ross '72 has been unanimously elected president of the 17-campus University of North Carolina. His election was announced today during a special meeting of the UNC Board of Governors. Ross, 60, will take office January 1, 2011, succeeding Erskine Bowles, 65, who announced in February that he would retire this December after five years in the post.

August 18 Davidson College Receives $1-Million Gift from Roy '55 and Sue Davis of Concord, N.C.; New Residence Hall Will Bear Davis Name
Davidson, NC -- Davidson College has received a gift of $1 million from J. Roy Davis, Jr. '55 and his wife, Sue. Roy Davis, a former trustee, is the chair emeritus of S&D Coffee Company in Concord, N.C., where he lives. In recognition of this gift, Davidson's new apartment residence hall will be named Davis Hall. The building will open and become home to 60 students when the spring semester begins in mid-January 2011. The college has also recently added the Davis name to the Alvarez College Union Café to honor the Davises for their longstanding dedication to the college.

The first woman to graduate from Davidson College, Marianna "Missy" Boaz Woodward, died unexpectedly on Sunday, July 25, while working out at a gym near her home in Fairbanks, Alaska. A pediatric physician at the Tanana Valley Clinic and Fairbanks Memorial Hospital for 17 years, she was 59 years old and in good health, her husband, artist Kes Woodward '73, said.

Preliminary site surveying and soil testing began last week for an apartment building to be known as Martin Court G, to be located between Flowe Residence Hall and Turner House. "The state of the economy has led to very favorable costs for construction," said David Holthouser, director of physical plant. "That, plus the fact that we'll be using the same architectural plans we drew up for Ryburn Residence Hall make this a very timely, cost-efficient project."
