Calvin Murphy is Special Superior Court judge in the 26th Judicial District of the North Carolina General Court of Justice. He was formerly an attorney and partner in the Charlotte law firm of Murphy & Chapman, PA, and former president of the North Carolina Bar Association.
A political science major at Davidson, Murphy was a member of the basketball team, treasurer of the College Union, and vice president of Sigma Nu social fraternity. He graduated as an ROTC commissioned officer. Calvin's commitment to diversity at Davidson led him to help found the Black Student Coalition at Davidson and to assist the Admissions office in recruiting minority students.
Following his graduation from Davidson, he served for three years as a lieutenant in the intelligence service of the U.S. Army. Murphy earned his JD from North Carolina Central School of Law. He worked in the Charlotte District Attorney's Office before entering private practice.
Murphy has mentored younger attorneys through his volunteer work with the North Carolina Black Lawyers Association and the Academy of Trial Lawyers. In addition, he is an active member of the Charlotte YMCA board of directors. He has volunteered for Davidson as a member of the Board of Visitors, several reunion planning committees, and the Davidson Black Alumni Network. He was actively involved in helping to launch the Love of Learning program at Davidson.
In 1992, he was presented the Love of Learning Lifetime Education Service Award by Davidson College and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. In 2005, he received the John W. Kuykendall Award for Community Service. Murphy lives in Charlotte and has two children, Zoel and Sommer. In 2009 Calvin was re-elected by the alumni to a second term on the Board of Trustees.
Most recently, North Carolina Senator Kay Hagan submitted Murphy's name, along with three others, as a potential successor to Judge Thornburg on the Federal Bench for the Western District of North Carolina. President Obama has not yet made the appointment.
Murphy's remarks on Tuesday will take us on his leadership journey from his days founding the Black Student Coalition on campus to his current position on the State's Superior Court.
