Math Coffee: "Untangling Causation in Complex Systems" Dr. Daniel Kaplan, Macalester College

When: October 29, 2009   4:00 pm -  5:00 pm

Where:  Chambers 3084 ,   Chambers Building

Ticket Required: No

For many people, statistics is about simplifying systems so that some standard test (e.g., the t-test) can be applied. Over the last decade, new approaches to doing statistics have emerged that can respect the intrinsic complexity of systems. I will describe a recent approach based on decomposing the structure of networks of causal influences. You don't need to know much about conventional statistics to be able to follow the talk.

We will gather in Mathematics Hall at 3:45 PM for our traditional light snacks.
