Center for Interdisciplinary Studies

The Center for Interdisciplinary Studies (CIS) offers capable and highly motivated students the opportunity to design their own interdisciplinary majors. Students with a passion for studying a topic, issue, scientific problem, region, historical era, or genre from various disciplinary perspectives are ideally suited to major in the CIS. Students must apply to become a Center major. Listen to some Center majors describe their experiences here.

Several established interdisciplinary majors are available through the Center: Neuroscience, Biochemistry, Comparative Literature, Public Health, Computational Biology, Film and Media Studies, and Africana Studies.  In addition Russian, Arabic, and Chinese have both literary studies and area studies majors available through the Center.

All these established majors require application and must be approved and require a full-year thesis. See basic requirements for these majors here.
