The department offers a stimulating curriculum that includes courses on language, literature, film, history, and culture. Learning objectives include proficiency in the German language; intercultural communicative competence; knowledge of German-speaking literature, culture, and history; and the critical analysis of those traditions.
Students may wish to major or minor in German Studies, or fulfill requirements for graduation, distribution, or concentration credit.
The faculty take an active interest in their students and boast a substantial publication and professional service record.
Strongly supporting the principle of study abroad, the department offers the Duke/Davidson in Berlin Program.
