Almost everyone agrees that stimulating an interest in science and mathematics at an early age is important for recruiting students to science careers. Not only do children lack science knowledge, science literacy in U.S. adults is considered poor. Science and math student-faculty teams from Davidson College can help to correct the perception that science and mathematics are too hard or too boring. By interacting with local school systems or civic groups, faculty and students can demonstrate how much fun science and mathematics can be and how thrilling it is to discover something new.
More than half of Davidson science and mathematics faculty have been involved in outreach efforts in recent years. Our Current outreach programs reach about 3,000 – 4,000 children and adults annually.
