The Department of Chemistry, situated in the Martin Chemical Laboratory (pictured to the right), includes nine full-time faculty members, three staff positions, and approximately twenty chemistry majors. Class sizes are small, especially in advanced courses, and every professor is available to students for assistance with their studies or for guidance with their academic program and career plans.
Members of the chemistry faculty are actively involved in scholarly research. The chemistry faculty have been highly successful in receiving grants to support their research and to acquire major instrumentation. Students are afforded an unusual opportunity to participate directly with professors in research ranging from the study of the binding of oxygen by hemoglobin to the capture and storage of solar energy. Many of the publications that have resulted from this research are co-authored by students.
