Parent Programs at New Student Orientation


Orientation is designed to help you make connections with the people who will play important roles in the life of your student.  This guide provides easy reference to orientation activities for parents.

Optional Early Move-In 
Residence Halls
You may choose to ease the busy pace of Orientation by placing your student's belongings in the residence halls during these hours. Please observe the signs that will direct you to the unloading area closest to your student's residence hall. New students will not sleep in the residence halls until Thursday night, August 20. Please park in Baker parking lot when you return Thursday morning.

Helpful Hint: Cars will not be allowed to line up for unloading prior to 6:00 p.m., and the line tends to be at its longest at the start of the evening. You may prefer to enjoy a leisurely dinner and queue up later in the evening (move-in ends at 9:00 p.m.).

Parent Registration 

Atrium Level, Alvarez College Union, Amphitheatre Entrance
Register first at the Alvarez College Union to receive important information and schedules. Your student will be involved in registration on the third and fourth levels for up to 45 minutes. Plan to meet your student after registration either at the Orientation Fair on the atrium level of the college union or in his or her residence hall. In order to minimize congestion and confusion at student registration, we ask that parents remain on the atrium level.

After you register, you and your students may want to visit with representatives from different college departments and programs who will be available to answer questions and describe their services. Some of the participating departments include Dining ServicesBusiness Services, Cat Card Services, Computer Services, area banks, and Campus Safety.    


Move-in continues 
Residence Halls

Hall counselors will distribute room keys and important information to incoming students who have registered at the college union. For students who move in Thursday morning, please follow the signs that direct you to the unloading area closest to your residence hall. Please register at the Union before unloading your car.

Workshops for Parents 

Parents are invited to attend workshops designed to answer common questions regarding college programs and resources. Workshops last approximately 45 minutes.

Director of Athletics Jim Murphy talks about what to expect for your student-athlete. 

Parenting College Students

Professionals from the Student Counseling Center address what to expect now that you have a college student in the family and suggest ways parents can be most helpful to college-age sons and daughters. 

Davidson and the World-An International Perspective

Representatives from the Dean Rusk Program and Study Abroad Office discuss ways Davidson students encounter the world beyond Davidson.

Career Services personnel help parents understand the four-year process students should use for life planning and how Career Services can help.
