Beginning German students perform Mein kleiner grüner Kaktus live at the International Festival 2004.

Congratulations to Mary Katherine Stickel ‘02 on being awarded a second year as a Fulbright teaching assistant in Bad Ischl, Austria (www.fulbright.at). Stickel, a German major who was Davidson Fellow in the Theater Department following graduation here, has also just landed a year-long internship at the Childrens Theater of Linz (www.kuddelmuddel.at).

Students in Maggie McCarthy's class, Dollars and Cineastes: Independent Film, have studied independent movies and will screen their own eight creations at “Sundav,” a festival whose title pays homage to the famous annual Sundance film festival. The screening is scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 7, at 8 p.m. in Hance Auditorium.

Congratulations to German major Derrick Miller '98, who just landed a job in the German Department at Grinnell College. Derrick, who went JYA to Würzburg 96-97, is finishing his Ph.D. in in German studies at UNC-Chapel Hill. He was also the recipient of a Fulbright grant to Berlin.

Professor Clayton Whisnant (History, Wofford College) will deliver a public lecture on Thursday, Sept. 30th, at 4:00pm in the Sprinkle Room of the Alvarez College Union. His topic is “The Struggle over the Homosexual Counterpublic in the Young West-German Republic 1950-1960.” Professor Whisnant studied with David Crew, Judith Coffin, and Peter Jelavich at the University of Texas and specializes in gender, family, and social history in modern Germany.

Congratulations to Maggie McCarthy on her recent publication of "Putting Stones in Place: Anne Duden and German Acts of Memory" in the German Quarterly (77.2, Spring 2004).

Kudos! Rory Adams '04 and Eileen Beardsley '04 win Fulbright/ PAD teaching assistantship grants to Germany. They will be teaching English at German high schools in 2004/05.

After teaching at the Dresden International School for a year, Bess Dawson '03 received a fellowship from Chapel Hill and will enter the Ph.D. program this fall. Congratulations!

JYAer Greta Stults '05 got to spend a weekend in Berlin at the German National Cheerleading Championships.

MOAJYAR! The "Mother Of All JYA Reunions," formally known as the JYA 40th Anniversary Reunion, will take place in Würzburg July 3rd and 4th, 2004. All JYA alumni are invited.

Congratulations to Chandra Payne for receiving a grant from the George L. Abernethy endowment to study the German educational system.
