With families, professors, staff, and supporters looking on proudly, Davidson presented dozens of awards of excellence to members of the college family at Spring Convocation on April 29. This annual rite brings together seniors and faculty members in academic regalia in a preview of Commencement, which will occur on Sunday, May 17.

The ceremony in Duke Family Performance Hall featured presentation of leadership, service, athletic, and academic awards, as well as recognition of newly elected members of honor societies and students who have received graduate school fellowships and scholarships. President Tom Ross ’72 began the proceedings by recognizing donors of new need-based, merit, and athletic scholarship funds established during the past year. Many of the donors were on hand and stood to receive applause from the audience. They also enjoyed a dinner following the ceremony.

The Omicron Delta Kappa honorary leadership fraternity presented its annual teaching award to Annie Ingram, professor of English, and its staff award to Rob Spach '84, college chaplain.  ODK also presented its Community Award to Kris Krider, planning director for the Town of Davidson.

The Student Government Association also honored two professors. Assistant Professor of Biology Sophia Sarafova received the annual faculty award for "a genuine concern for the students' lives." "She frequently attends student theatre and musical performances, and regularly attends student organizations' meetings and events." The SGA also presented a pre-major advising award to Visiting Associate Professor of Chemistry David Brown. He was hailed as "not only incredibly knowledgeable about the organic chemistry course he teaches so passionately, but he is an excellent communicator who goes above and beyond when it comes to accommodating students."

The ceremony concluded with presentation of  Honorary Doctor of Science degrees to medical ethicist Dr. Edmund D. Pellegrino and missionary physician Dr. Stanley C. Topple '53.
