E. Cader Howard '69 (Awarded 2009) The Alumni Service Award is presented to alumni and other friends of Davidson College who have rendered and performed a high degree of service to the institution. Today we are honored to recognize E. Cader Howard of the Class of 1969.
Even before Cader set foot on the Davidson campus in the fall of 1965, he had begun his journey toward a life of leadership and service. At New Bern High School, he was president of the Junior Civitan Club, Vice President of the Political Science Club, and Student Council Elections Chairman. His grades landed him on the Honor Roll, and his poetry was published in the school newspaper. He achieved Eagle Scout distinction.
At Davidson, Cader continued his trajectory. He was a Presbyterian Scholar, earning Dean’s List honors on his way to his degree in History. He served as Rush Chair and Social Chair of his fraternity, Alpha Tau Omega, and remained active in the Young Democrats.
Shortly after graduation, the United States Army commissioned him as a Second Lieutenant in Infantry. He also was selected by the North Carolina Governor’s Committee on Law and Order to work with the Neuse River Economic Development Commission as a summer intern. Before graduating in 1972 from the University of North Carolina School of Law, Cader served on the staff of the North Carolina Law Review. Today, Cader is the Managing Shareholder of the Raleigh, NC law firm that bears his name: Howard, Stallings, From and Hutson.
Cader completed six years of service on the Permanent Judicial Commission of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church. He has been active as an elder, deacon, and adult Sunday school teacher in his local church. He serves on the local board of directors of BB&T. He is President-Elect of the Cary Rotary Club. He is currently serving on the board of directors of the Cary Chamber of Commerce. He was the charter president of the Cary Civitan Club, and served on the Board of Directors of Presbyterian Homes and the Glenaire Retirement Community.
Cader served as the president of the Wake County chapter of Davidson College Alumni for thirteen years – so long that several alumni happily requested that he be crowned “president for life.” During the Campaign for Davidson in the early 1990s, he served on the Raleigh Regional Campaign Committee. Cader also has loyally supported the Annual Fund, and made generous gifts to the Malcolm Lester Fund for the Teaching of History.
For his longtime service to Davidson, to the great state of North Carolina, and to his local community, the Davidson College Alumni Association honors E. Cader Howard of the Class of 1969 with the Alumni Service Award on the occasion of his 40th Reunion, this 25th day of April, 2009.
